Unlock the soundtrack your Volkswagen Golf 7R deserves

Give your Volkswagen Golf R Mk7 5G 2.0 TSI a serious upgrade with this Cobra Sport catback system. Expect a deeper, crisper tone on start-up, a purposeful growl under load and a premium finish that looks as good as it sounds. We run this system on our own cars and customer builds at MJ Modifications and feedback has been consistently excellent for sound quality, fit and overall refinement.

Why owners choose this Golf 7R catback

  • Crafted in 76.2 mm pipework from the catalyst back to replace the centre and rear sections for improved flow and a richer note.
  • Choice of sound levels: resonated for a refined, long-distance friendly tone or non-resonated for a louder, more aggressive soundtrack.
  • Valved or non-valved layouts available. Valved systems retain the factory valve motors so sound changes with drive mode selection.
  • Supplied with all required fittings and gaskets for a straightforward install.
  • Tailpipe options include quad 5 x 3 inch oval slash-cut tips in stainless finish or upgraded ceramic-coated ends for a stealth look.
  • Fully guaranteed for peace of mind.

Fitment and specification

Designed for the Golf R Mk7 on the 5G chassis, model years 2012 to 2018. This catback routes from the catalyst rearwards and replaces both the centre silencer section and rear box.

Pipe diameter: 3 inch or 76.2 mm.

Sound options explained

  • Resonated: includes a centre silencer for a subtle but sporty character. Ideal for daily use and motorway cruising.
  • Non-resonated: removes the centre silencer for a louder, more vocal tone and stronger presence.

Valve control options

  • Valved: keeps the factory valve actuators. Switching driving modes, for example from Eco to Race, will continue to change the sound level.
  • Non-valved: deletes the OE valves. Drive mode selection will no longer alter the exhaust volume. This does not affect how the car runs. Cobra Sport have tuned the system so it sounds right without valves.

Fitted images show the non-valved resonated version.

Proven gains

Dyno testing of the resonated catback has shown an increase of up to +7.4 bhp. Independent testing of a full turbo-back setup with a sports catalyst and aftermarket intake recorded a gain of +40.76 bhp measured at all four wheels, with a significant 35 percent weight saving versus the stock turbo-back. Note that the larger figures and weight saving relate to the turbo-back configuration and intake combination, not the catback alone.

What’s included

  • Catback sections in 76.2 mm diameter
  • Centre silencer where applicable
  • Rear section with quad tip outlets
  • All clamps, fittings and gaskets required
  • Tailpipe finish of your choice as specified

Real-world usability

Valved systems remain calm in comfort-oriented modes and wake up when you select a sportier setting. Resonated versions keep cabin resonance in check for daily driving. Non-resonated brings the drama if you want maximum character from the EA888 2.0T engine on the MQB platform.
